WINDFARM BOATS

The increased reliance on wind-generated electricity is well-documented and only set to increase. As such there is a natural proliferation of wind farms throughout the UK and Europe. Once a rare sight, it is now extremely uncommon not to see a wind turbine on any country trip.

Heritage groups, rambling associations and Landowners often have justifiable objections to wind turbines on land, which has lead to more and more wind farms being created out to sea. Only this month the Scottish government gave planning consent for one of the world’s biggest floating wind farms, nine miles off the coast of Aberdeen. 84 new turbines are also to be installed in the Outer Moray Firth.

Generating clean energy from offshore turbines is a huge and expanding business.

Naturally the construction of these farms is highly complex and relies on highly competent and professional firms and technicians. It also relies on highly specialised craft, which are usually purpose built. The roles of these vessels are varied and manifold – they are used as personnel transport, cargo transport, ROV transport and support vessels, diving support vessels, survey or guard craft and for the maintenance and recovery of generators for example.

We do not need to remind readers of the treacherous nature of the seas around Britain’s coast, especially the seas around northern and eastern Scotland. These vessels are sure and sturdy and built to the highest specifications, but there are numerous hazards they must overcome. That’s where specialist workboat insurance becomes so important.
